Frankenweenie – Back From The Dead

by admin

MARCH 1 UPDATE: The Teaser Trailer has been released! View it at the bottom of the post!

This is the story of Frankenweenie… well, technically, the re-telling of Frankenweenie.

“Young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.”

Before Tim Burton started in on his latest stop motion production of “Frankenweenie”, there was a previous “Frankenweenie”. Granted, the original was also done by Burton and holds the same base story, but it was

Frankenweenie - 1984

a 29 minute, black and white, live-action short that was produced by Disney. Mind you, it certainly felt much longer, especially in 1980s. The cast was decent, sporting Shelley Duvall, Daniel Stern, and Sophia Coppola, amongst a handful of others.

Not surprisingly, Disney felt that the original short was too frightening for the family themed company, and Burton was fired for wasting their money and resources on projects that they felt weren’t appropriate. As in proper corporate style, once Burton shot to fame, Disney released the short on VHS, albeit a censored version, and ran it for awhile on the Disney Channel. Eventually, it drifted off into the nothingness of forgotten Disney programming.

…But that’s all water under the gravestone, as we know Burton and Disney have had a very successful animation history together ever since “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.

Coming around 28 years later, Burton is recreating the original piece into a full length feature in his brilliant signature style. Keeping true to the original, it’s going to be in black and white, in the expected gothic undertones, but will also bring in the heartening aspects about a boy and his (reassembled & reincarnated) dog.

The cast is definitely not shy on talent, either. The script reunites Tim

Frankenweenie - 2012

Burton with Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, and brings in Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, and Conchata Ferrell.

Set for release on October 5, 2012.

Trailer: The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey

by admin

First things first, here it is!

A new word needs to be created… “The Hobbit” trailer has been released, and it is beyond what ‘mega’ and ‘epic’ could ever cover.

The trailer gives us a moderately HUGE glance into a new world, before the darkness of Sauron envelopes most of the land, while still keeping very true to the previous Lord Of The Rings Trilogy films. The LOTR trilogy brought us vast scenes of the natural New Zealand landscapes, and a few digitally enhanced scenes, but still relatively natural looking for the storyline. The Hobbit trailer is showing some magnificently empowering scenes of hope and courage (the sunset/sunrise scenes are indescribable), along with the dark troubled path that must be traversed. Of course, there is the epic journey, and probably lots of walking and fleeing, which would be sure to showcase those brilliant landscape shots again. The greens still pop in the forest, and the light filters through windows just perfectly. Fav shot: Galadriel and Gandalf on the cliff.

The Hobbit looks like it’s also going to be true to the previous symphonic soundtrack and haunting songs. The a-cappella bit sends shivers down the spine. Of course, you can’t really skimp on anything after the success of the Trilogy.

The cast is top notch, as well. Martin Freeman (The Office-UK, Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) is the young Bilbo who goes on the treacherous journey, accompanied by Ian McKellen, reprising the role of Gandalf. With them go the Dwarves, and if we learned anything from Gimli, this bunch looks like the source of the comic relief, as well.

We do have to wait almost a whole year before The Unexpected Journey is released, but on the bright side, you can catch it before the “end of time” next year.

The Hobbit will be split into two movies: The Unexpected Journey (2012) and There And Back Again (2013).
